Guffey, formerly known as Freshwater, is thought to have been established due to a mining boom in the early 1890s. The community received its post office in 1895 and the townsite was platted the following year. By 1896 the Freshwater Mining District had been formed but that same year the town’s name was changed to Guffey in honor of a man who had mining interests in the district. The town flourished, supporting nearby mining and ranching interests and hosting numerous businesses. By the turn of the century the population had reached over 200, but soon found itself in decline and had only 12 residents remaining after World War I.

From Hartsel, take Highway 9 south for approximately 26 miles and park in the parking lot on your left, just after County Road 102. The community of Guffey is located north of this location at the CSP-Guffey cache.
