The hydraulic ram pump at Emmetts Garden was installed in 1906 and pumped water half a mile up hill to a10,000 gallon storage tanks situated behind the main house. This supplied the house, garden, surrounding farmland and dwellings as their only source of water until mains water was laid on.
The pump uses the momentum of a relatively large amount of moving water from the natural spring, which runs into a large pond, to pump a relatively small amount of water uphill. The water runs down towards the pump and when it has gathered enough speed, a valve closes creating a high pressure which forces a second valve open and the high pressure water to head up the delivery pipe to its destination, higher than where the original water started. The ram is often used in remote areas since it requires no outside power source of power other than the kinetic energy of water. (Diagrams can be found on the information boards by the ram pump).
