Geocache Description:

This small cache is located near St. John the Baptist Church, West Street, Erith.  The cache is not on church property.

It is possible there was a place of worship here in Saxon or even Roman times.  Recorded in Domesday Book as being owned by William the Conqueror’s brother, Odo – Bishop of Bayeux, Erith has been inhabited for well over 1000 years.  Originally the settlement was concentrated around the church rather than the current town centre location at the other end of West Street.

This church was built by the Normans and is one of the oldest buildings in Erith.  It has been added to in the 12th, 13th & 15th centuries and restored in the Victorian era.  An engraved stone in the boundary wall some way left of the cache states the wall was erected in the Jubilee Year of Queen Victoria.

If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication.

There is also a Church Micro Stats & Information page found via the Bookmark list
