The Church of St Mary and St Radegund in Whitwell is medieval and located on rising ground at the South end of the village and adjoins the rectory. Various portions of the church were constructed in the 12th, 13th, 15th and 16th centuries. It also has some more modern parts. The church was on the Holly Wells and Pilgrim Paths (medieval pilgrimage – see info board near the gate).
When the church was originally formed, it was of two separate manorial chapels, each with a different dedication. The dividing wall was finally removed between the two in the 16th century, at around the same time the tower was added. The early chapel was dedicated to St. Radegund, and belonging to the parish of Gatcombe, the later chapel to St. Mary.
Whitwell's post office re-opened inside the church's bell tower in April 2007. Although other Post Offices have been relocated to new locations on the grounds of local churches, it is the first of its kind in the country to be located inside the church.
