Geocache Description:

Riggindale and Mardale Waters Circuit: a 4.5 mile walk along one of Lakeland's finest ridges, an easy traverse below a crag, and two lovely tarns, making an excellent walk.

From Riggindale, either continue straight on, climbing Long Stile onto High Street, or descend to Blea Water and up to Piot Crag.

The picture shows the route to Piot Crag.  A pleasant grassy slope leads up to the bottom of the crag.  The traverse across to an obvious block on the skyline is quite easy with no particular sense of vertical drops, it's just across a rough hillside with a gentle slope.  Small sheep trods run along the side and no scrambling or difficulties are encountered. The main ridge (with the cache) leads down to Small Water and is generally pleasant grass.  If you are an average hill walker this route presents no problems, and is no harder than ascending Riggindale. Lovely views across to Nan Bield Pass, down to Small Water and Haweswater, and back across to Riggindale.

The route down from Mardale Ill Bell is easy until Piot Crag, where the angle increases.  It's quite feasible and indeed suggested by AW, but worth noting it is steeper and slightly more challenging than the Blea Water route.

The cache is 7m from the obvious block, towards the crag at the first rocks, behind a thin slab.
Down to Small Water
