In 1560 Richard Bullock built a smithy on the corner of what is now torkington park.The building later became Bullock Smithy Inn, and gradually the whole area became known as Bullock Smithy.The name became unpopular with residents, probably due to John Wesley founder of the methodist movement describing Bullock Smithy as "one of the most famous villages in the country for all manners of wickedness". The name was changed in around 1835 to Hazel Grove.
The Bullock Smithy Hike is a 56 mile circular route starting and finishing in Hazel Grove. The official start/finish is Devonshire park (location of the cache), although the official Bullock smithy Hike HQ is the 3rd Hazel Grove Scout hut 200 yards down the road. The official Bullock Smithy Hike always takes place on the first full weekend in september, participants must complete the 56 mile hike in under 24 hours passing through each of the twelve checkpoints in the correct order, the checkpoints are
