Grandma Moses was the second child born to Leroy and Rosie Brown. Leroy left Moses' brother on a doorstep before Moses was born. Her older brother's disappearance still haunts the Brown family. Leroy and Rosie loved the name Moses and named their first born daughter after the man from the Bible. They didn't care that Moses is a man's name. Leroy was so riddled with guilt after abandoning their oldest son, that in a way, he wished Moses was a boy.

Cornelius was born two years later on the steam boat. He was an ornery boy and just couldn't seem to sit still. Must have been the constant waves battering the sides of the boat during delivery. Three years later, along came Mabel. Mabel loved to follow Moses around everywhere and the two could be found often exploring the woods and picking mulberries which Rosie would use to make pie. The family traveled South for a few years down to Mexico. I'm not quite sure what happened but the next thing the family knew, they had another sibling with a little bit darker skin. He was named Jorge. Leroy was a forgiving man and bought Rosie a chicken to show her his faithfulness despite her indiscretion. However, Leroy promptly moved the family North just outside St. Louis. It was there that Moses' youngest siblings Agnes and Elmer were born, a mere 50 seconds between them.

The six siblings grew up knowing they had an older brother. They wondered often of what he must be like, whether or not he would enjoy climbing trees and exploring cave like areas, or if growing up in a different family would mold him to be much, much different than them.
