Mal Pica no Tejo Traditional Geocache

Bem vindo/a a esta cache que o leva a conhecer o cais e ancoradouro de Malpica do Tejo, no rio com o mesmo nome, em Castelo Branco.

Uma cache de natureza, em pleno Parque Natural do Tejo Internacional, onde a paisagem é a grande mais valia deste local, e que vale bem a pena a deslocação. Um local onde a floresta se conjuga com o leito do rio Tejo, aqui represado pela barragem de Cedillo.

Welcome to this cache that leads to meet the dock and boathouse Malpica do Tejo in the river with the same name, in Castelo Branco.

A cache of nature, in the Tagus International Natural Park, where the landscape is the most valuable asset of this place, and well worth the trip. A place where the forest is coupled with the bed of the Tagus river, here by the dam Cedillo.

O local e a História

Estamos naquele que talvez seja dos menos visitados Parques Naturais do nosso país, o do Tejo Internacional, talvez por estar longe dos grandes centros urbanos e fora das rotas turísiticas, é um dos Parques que partilhamos com Espanha. Aqui, num local que não é de passagem e onde só vai quem realmente quer conhecer, há imenso por descobrir!

Felizmente que o Geopark Naturtejo veio dar a conhecer alguns dos tesouros que estavam esquecidos nesta região beirã do nosso país, mas alguns ainda ficaram por divulgar. Este foi um deles!

Nos arrabaldes de Malpica do Tejo, este é o ponto de contacto desta aldeia de Castelo Branco com o rio Tejo. É aqui que se situa o seu cais e o seu ancoradouro, onde os locais podem navegar nas águas da barragem de Cedillo, mesmo em frente à localidade espanhola de Herrera de Alcântara, e ao seu cais e ancoradouro. É também um dos mais bonitos locais da nossa fronteira com Espanha, onde literalmente a mesma se confunde e onde nos sentimos do lado de cá, quase que desafiando eles, os espanhóis, que estão do lado de lá.

Local de rica fauna e flora, não é de estranhar encontrar por aqui veados, javalis, abutres e outros animais que não estamos habituados a ver no campo.

E porquê se chama a este local Malpica do Tejo? Pois bem, a história está reflectida no nome desta cache, Mal Pica no Tejo, e o local onde está....

Conta-se que há muito, muito tempo, se fixou neste local, nas margens do Tejo e quando ainda não havia barragem, um pequeno povoado. Este povo, gente humilde e nómada, habituados a dificuldades, encontraram aqui um porto de abrigo. Refugiados das guerras e da fome, estavam ali num local onde ninguém os encontrava, ninguém os incomodava, pois tal era a dificuldade em ali chegar, que a unica maneira era pelo reino vizinho de Castela, nessa altura em guerra com o jovem reino de Portugal, e atravessando o rio. Bom, também do outro lado do rio se tinha fixado em tempos um povoado, que na mesma situação deste vivia isolado e longe de tudo e todos. Estes dois povos partilhavam o rio de onde tiravam o seu sustento, e usavam-no para comunicar entre si, partilhando bens e outras mercadorias. Mas, não durou muito tempo que o reino de Castela obrigou o povoado amigo a fechar a fronteira aos nossos, pois os nossos estavam do lado português, do lado do inimigo Portugal. Assim, terminaram anos e anos de sã convivência, e os que antes era amigos eram agora inimigos, mesmo que obrigados. A guerra tinha finalmente chegado ali. Os portugueses tiveram que construir uma fortaleza, uma torre de vigia, a que hoje chamamos a Torre da Atalaia ou Torrinha, pois precisavam de vigiar os seus antigos amigos. Mas....algo de terrivel estava para acontecer: como agora já não podiam trocar bens com o outro lado da fronteira, só podiam alimentar-se com o peixe do rio e alguma caça que por ali havia. E contam os antigos que eles tanto pescaram, tanto pescaram, não tardou a que os pescadores dissessem "o peixe mal pica no Tejo, o peixe mal pica no Tejo, já não há peixe, temos que sair daqui!". E foi por isso, que esse povo abandonou as margens do Tejo e subiu para a colina para fazer um novo povoado, onde hoje é Malpica do Tejo, nome esse que teve então origem na malfadada sorte que tiveram enquanto estiveram nas margens do Tejo...

The local and the Story

We are in perhaps the least-visited national parks of our country, the International Tagus, perhaps to be away and out of major urban centers of turísitics routes, is one of the parks that we share with Spain. Here, in a place that is not going to pass and where only those who really want to know, there's a lot to discover!

Fortunately the Geopark Naturtejo came to make known some of the treasures that were forgotten beirã this region of our country, but some were still to disclose. This was one of them!.

Outskirts of Malpica do Tejo, this is the contact point of the village of Castelo Branco with the river Tagus. This is where your dock and your boat dock, where locals can navigate the waters of the dam Cedillo, just opposite the Spanish town of Herrera de Alcantara, and its pier and boat dock is located. It is also one of the most beautiful places of our border with Spain, where it literally becomes confused and where we feel on this side, almost defying them, the Spaniards, who are on the other side.

Place of rich flora and fauna, it is not surprising to find here deer, wild boars, vultures and other animals that are not used to seeing in the field.

And why is called to this location Malpica do Tejo? Well, history is reflected in the name of this cache, Mal Pica in the Tagus, and where is .....

It is said that long long ago , settled in this place , on the banks of the Tagus and when there was no dam , a small settlement . This people , humble and nomadic people, accustomed to hardships , they found a haven here . Refugees from wars and famine , there were a place where no one met them , nobody bothered them , because such was the difficulty in getting there, the only way was by the neighboring kingdom of Castile , then at war with the young Kingdom of Portugal , and across the river . Well, also the other side of the river had fixed once a village , which lived in the same situation this secluded and away from everything and everyone . These two nations shared the river where they got their sustenance , and used it to communicate with each other , sharing goods and other goods . But did not last long as the kingdom of Castile forced the town friend to close the border to ours, because ours were the Portuguese side , the side of the enemy Portugal . Thus ended years and years of healthy living , and those who were friends before were now enemies , even if forced . The war had finally gotten there . The Portuguese had to build a fortress , a watchtower , what we call the Tower or Watchtower Torrinha , they needed to watch their old friends . But .... something terrible was about to happen : as now they could no longer exchange goods with the other side of the border , could only be fed with river fish and some venison that was there for . They have both old they fished , fished much , was soon the fishermen say " evil fish bites on the Tagus , evil pricks fish along the river there are no fish , we have to get out of here ! " . And so it was , that this people abandoned the banks of the Tagus and went up to the hill to make a new settlement , which today is Malpica do Tejo , so that this name originated from the ill-fated luck you had while you were on the banks of the Tagus...

A Cache

Esta é uma cache tradicional que o leva a conhecer o cais e ancoradouro de Malpica do Tejo. Para lá chegar, prepare-se para uma pequena aventura!:)

Dirija-se a Malpica do Tejo e no centro da aldeia vá em direcção ao Rio Tejo. Não deixe de percorrer com calma e aprecie este local onde o tempo parece ter parado. Hoje muitas das casas estão vazias pois os locais em busca de um vida melhor há muito que partiram e emigraram. Ficaram as marcas de um passado não muito longínquo onde se trabalhava a terra e se lutava pelo pão do dia a dia com muita dificuldade. Ao fundo do lugar vai apanhar uma estrada de terra batida que começa a descer em direcção ao vale do Parque Natural do Tejo Internacional. Siga o caminho, e prepare-se para percorrer quilómetros e quilómetros de caminhos por montes e vales, por meio de florestas, até chegar perto do seu destino. Se tem uma viatura ligeira que não seja 4x4 deixe a sua viatura no miradouro antes da descida acentuada para o cais, de onde se tem uma vista priveligiada sobre todo o Tejo e as duas margens. Do outro lado fica Herrera de Alcântara e em baixo fico o cais e ancoradouro dessa mesma localidade, mesmo em frente a nós. Caso seja inverno e o caminho esteja enlameado é preferível deixar o carro antes de começar a descer, a cerca de 1km da cache. A partir daqui vá a pé e desfrute, mas guarde energias e fôlego para a subida no regresso! :)

A cache está junto ao cais flutuante, no cimo da encosta. Se for verão, não deixe de aproveitar para um banho no rio. E também leve um pic nic para desfrutar com a família ou amigos enquanto aprecia a calma deste local. Vá com tempo, aprecie a paisagem e os monumentos. Por fim pegue na cache,  faça o log e desfrute! Do outro ladoEm frente do cais, quase a meio do rio, sobressai das águas a antiga contrução a que se chama a Torre da Atalaia ou Torrinha. A Oeste do cais, na margem do rio, a uns 50m deste e à direita quando se está de frente para o rio, estão as ruínas de antigas habitações. Se for verão ou o nível das águas estiver baixo poderá visitá-las. Era aqui o local que conto na história acima. Ah, é verdade...a história fui eu que inventei, mas podia muito bem ser verdade! :)

A cache tem logbook, stashnote, um pequeno lápis e algumas prendas. O material de escrita não é para levar, e deixe algo de valor semelhante ao que levar. Partilhe depois a história da caçada no seu log.

The Cache

This is a traditional cache that takes you to meet the dock and boathouse Malpica do Tejo. To get there, get ready for a little adventure :).

Drive to Malpica do Tejo in the village center and go towards the Tagus River . Be sure to go slowly and enjoy this place where time seems to have stopped . Today many of the houses are empty because local in search of a better life have long since departed and emigrated . Were the marks of a not too distant past where he worked the land and fought for bread everyday with great difficulty . At the bottom of the place will pick up a dirt road that begins to descend towards the Tagus International Natural Park valley. Follow the path and get ready to go miles and miles of paths through hills and valleys , through forests , until you get near your destination . If you have a private car than 4x4 leave your car at the viewpoint before the steep descent to the pier , from where you have a privileged view across the Tagus and the two banks . The other side is Herrera de Alcantara and get down the pier and boat dock this same location , just in front of us. If it is winter and the road is muddy it is preferable to leave the car before you start down , about 1km from the cache . From here take a walk and enjoy , but save energy and breath to the rise in return ! :)

The cache is near the floating dock at the top of the slope. If it is summer, be sure to enjoy a bath in the river. And also take a picnic to enjoy with family or friends while enjoying the quiet of this place. Go with time, enjoy the scenery and monuments. Finally take the cache, log and enjoy! The other ladoEm front of the pier, almost half of the river, stands the ancient construction of water which is called the Tower of the Watchtower or Torrinha. The West Pier, on the river bank, about 50m of this and right when you are facing the river, are the ruins of ancient dwellings. If it is summer or the water level is low you can visit them. Here was the place that tale in the story above. Oh, yes ... the story I invented, but it could very well be true! :)

The cache has logbook, stashnote, a small pencil and some gifts. The material is not written to take, and leave something of similar value to that lead. Then share the story of the hunt in your log.
