Geocache Description:

This cache is placed in a beautiful spot on land behind Oaks-in-Charnwood churchyard. The cache is in a very peaceful location, commanding superb views over the local countryside including Ives Head. This spot is particularly scenic when the bluebells or daffodils are out, or in the snow.

Parking can be found on the verge opposite the church gates.

Lying in the beautiful valley of Charley, this beautiful small church wih its lovingly maintained grounds stands as an oasis of peace and quiet that is difficult to find in the busy, busy world of our 21st-century.

It was built originally as a "Chapel of Ease" i.e. a plave of worship offering east access for the farmers and their workers for whom, in the early nineteenth century, a place of worship was far too distant.

Dedicated originally in 1815 to St. Mary and know as the "Chapel in the Wilderness", it was the first new church to be built in the country for many generations.

The church was closed during 1882 because of the dangerous state of the roof and the opportunity was taken to extend it and add a chancel, porch, organ chamber and new organ. At the same time, a ring of 6 bells was added.  The extended church was reopened on 26th July 1883 and dedicated on this occasion to St James the Greater. The bells were subsequently augmented to 8.

A Sunday School was conducted in a small room at the base of the tower. This was eventually to become a day school. Such was the popularity of this "School in the Forest" that a new schoolrooom was built (at a cost of £100). Opened in 1851 the building stayed in use almost unchanged until it closed in 1953, by which time the school register had reduced to six.

The church continues to be a centre of worship for a dedicated congregation.

You are looking for a cunningly disguised magnetic micro cache. You will need a pin or tweezers to extract the log. Please replace the cache carefully so that it doesnt get accidentally disturbed or knocked off.

Please note that it was hard to get a consistent GPS reading, so the co-ordinates may be a few feet out. However, the GZ is quite prominent and should be easy to locate.
