Geocache Description:

Please write an interesting log, not just TFTC or a cut and paste - I enjoy reading about your visit and it's very boring to get dull logs. Be inventive!

Although completed in 1907, the three dams of Kennick, Tottiford and Trenchford Resorvoirs struggled to fulfil the needs of supplying the rapidly growing Torquay with water.

So in 1927, an Intake on the South Teign river was constructed at Fernworthy Farm, and a pipe laid to this spot to redirect water into this reservoir to augment Torquay's supply. This alone seemed to be insufficient, as in 1934, Fernworthy Farm was demolished and work on the dam for the Fernworthy Reservoir, some 8.6 miles as the crow flies to the Northwest, that we know today was started.

Up to 13,000,000 liters are taken from Fernworthy and added to this reservoir via an underwater outlet that discharges around 30 meters away. When the water is low, you can sometimes see a swirling on the water's surface.

A detailed paper giving full details of this, and other Dartmoor water plans, can be found at the Dartmoor Society. The Dartmoor Way passes this cache.
