Geocache Description:


The Copou Park or Copou Gardens is a historic park located in the Copou Hill neighborhood, Iaşi, Romania. A landmark of Iaşi, with centuries old trees, Copou Gardens is one of the first Romanian coordinated public parks.

Development started in 1833, at a time when Iaşi was the capital of Moldavia, following designs by Gheorghe Asachi and Mihail Singurov. The garden was enlarged in 1849 and 1852, while in 1860 street lamps were installed for the first time.

The park includes the oldest monument in Romania, the Obelisk of Lions, dedicated to the Law of Organic Rules, the first law of political, administrative and juridical organization in the Romanian Principalities. It also includes the Mihai Eminescu Museum and his Linden Tree.

1. Lions Obelisck - N 47° 10.717 E 027° 34.029 

Lions Obelisk was dedicated to the Law of Organic Rules, the first law of political, administrative and juridical organization in the Romanian Principalities. It is the oldest monument from Romania.

Question: You should be in front of a board/sign with the date when this monument was build. A is the third digit.

2. Mihai Eminescu - N 47° 10.707 E 027° 33.995 

Mihai Eminescu was a Romantic poet, novelist and journalist, often regarded as the most famous and influential Romanian poet. His poems span a large range of themes, from nature and love to hate and social commentary. His childhood years were evoked in his later poetry with deep nostalgia. Eminescu was influenced by the work of Arthur Schopenhauer, and some have suggested that his most notable poem, "Luceafărul", includes elements of Vedic cosmogony. Eminescu's poems have been translated in over 60 languages. His life, work and poetry strongly influenced the Romanian culture and his poems are widely studied in Romanian public schools.

3. Eminescu's Linden Tree - N 47° 10.698 E 027° 34.005 

Eminescu's Linden Tree is the oldest tree from Copou Garden. It is supposed to be 250 years old. Because of it's age, the middle of the tree is hollow and filled with cement. The branches are supported by metalic poles. Eminescu was comming very offen to this park to meet his friend Ion Creanga.

4. Veronica Micle - N 47° 10.685 E 027° 33.960 

Veronica Micle was a romanian poet whose work was influenced by Romanticism. She is best known for her love affair with the poet Mihai Eminescu, one of the most important Romanian writers. In March 1872, in Vienna, she met Eminescu, beginning a relationship that would last for the rest of their lives. At first he would visit the literary salon that she hosted. Their friendship had become love sometime between 1875, when they started dedicating poems to each other, and 1878 (sources vary).

6. Ioan Luca Caragiale - N 47° 10.646 E 027° 34.086 

I. L. Caragiale was a Wallachian-born Romanian playwright, short story writer, poet, theater manager, political commentator and journalist. He is considered one of the greatest Romanian playwrights and writers, a leading representative of local humor, and a main representative of Junimea, an influential literary society with which he parted during the second half of his life.
Caragiale's work, spanning four decades, covers the ground between Neoclassicism, Realism, and Naturalism, building on an original synthesis of foreign and local influences. His plays constituted an important venue for criticism of late 19th-century Romanian society, while in later works of fiction Caragiale adopted the fantasy genre or turned to historical fiction.
