WILCOX (PLYMOUTH) MILL]
From Grist Mill to Village Industry

Known as Plymouth Mill originally, the gristmill was later called Wilcox Mill when David Wilcox purchased it in 1879.

David's sons, George and John Wilcox, produced the renowned Magnolia flour at this mill.

The river provided the power here near the historic village of Plymouth. For a century, starting with the power from the Rouge River flowing over its water wheel. The site was purchased in 1920 by Henry Ford from the Wilcox family.

Ford's Plymouth Village Industry plant became the source for 95% of Ford Motor Company taps, tools used to form internal screw threads.

Ford built a Village Industry here to make small automotive parts with local workers. Ford replaced the building and the dam, creating the lake and increasing the waterpower. During World War II workers here also produced parts for aircraft engines.

During World War II, in addition to taps, three parts were manufactured here for Pratt and Whitney airplane engines.
