Geocache Description:

O objectivo desta cache é dar a conhecer uma bonita igreja do Porto, onde a História realmente se sente, e o segredo que alberga: o coração de D. Pedro IV.

The goal of this cache is to showcase a beautiful Porto church, where History can really be felt, and the secret it shelters: the heart of King Peter IV (D. Pedro IV).

A Igreja da Lapa, dedicada a Nossa Senhora da Lapa, começou a ser construída em 1756 para substituir a anterior capela da Lapa, que se tinha tornado demasiado pequena para a grande afluência de fiéis. A Igreja só foi dedicada em 1779 e as duas torres da fachada só foram terminadas em 1863.

The Church of Our Lady of Lapa started to be built in 1756 to substitute for the ancient chapel, which had got too small for the crowds of faithful who paid homage there. The Church was only consecrated in 1779 and only by 1863 were the two towers in the façade finished.


Tendo sido construída ao longo de tanto tempo, apresenta uma mistura de estilo rococó e neoclássico. A Igreja é de nave única, com uma capela-mor mais estreita, e a fachada principal por um corpo central de dois andares e um frontão triangular, ladeado por duas torres sineiras – ambas ainda funcionam e dão as horas 24 horas por dia!...)

Since the construction took so long, the church presents a mixture of rococo and neoclassical styles. It has a single nave and a narrower sanctuary, and the front is composed of a central two-floored body with a triangular pediment, sided by two bell towers – both still work and loudly chime every half hour, 24 hours a day!...


No coro-alto está um fantástico órgão de tubos, da autoria do mestre-organeiro alemão Georg Jann, instalado em 1995. É o maior órgão da Península Ibérica e é assombroso ouvi-lo em concertos, que acontecem frequentemente, são famosos e muito concorridos – aconselho vivamente quem puder a assistir!

On the choir, above the entrance, there is a fantastic pipe organ, by the German organ builder, in place since 1995. It’s the largest organ in the Iberian Peninsula and it’s wondrous to listen to it – there are concerts here often, they’re famous and always crowded – I strongly suggest you to attend one!



A Igreja da Lapa alberga o coração de D. Pedro IV, oferecido à cidade do Porto após a sua morte, segundo a sua vontade expressa.
As Guerras Liberais ocorreram entre 1828 e 1834 entre as tropas dos dois irmãos e aspirantes ao trono, D. Miguel que pretendia governar enquanto rei absoluto, e D. Pedro adepto das ideias liberais e constitucionais. As tropas deste último foram sitiadas na cidade pelos Absolutistas durante 13 meses agonizantes (fome, peste, bombardeamentos constantes, …), entre Julho de 1832 e Agosto de 1833, no chamado Cerco do Porto.

The Church of Lapa shelters the heart of King Peter IV (D. Pedro IV), which he bequeathed to the city of Porto.

The Liberal Wars were fought between 1828 and 1834 between the armies of the two brothers and pretenders to the throne, D. Miguel who aspired to govern as an absolute king, and D. Pedro IV who adhered to the liberal and constitutional ideals. The Absolutists besieged Pedro’s troops in Porto for 13 agonizing months (July 1832 to August 1833), during which the city endured famine, the plague and constant bombings, in what is named in History the Close-Siege of Porto.


Os Portuenses converteram-se em adeptos de D. Pedro e da causa liberal, lutaram bravamente por D. Pedro e nunca se renderam nem deixaram que a cidade fosse tomada – deste período vem a nomeação do Porto como “Invicta” e o dragão existente no seu brasão tradicional (e não só), sinal de bravura.
D. Pedro, ao deixar o Porto para prosseguir a sua vitoriosa campanha contra os absolutistas, proclamou-se extremamente grato à cidade, dizendo: “Eu vou, mas o meu coração estará sempre no Porto”.

De facto, D. Pedro nunca esqueceu esta frase que tomou literalmente e o levou a, no seu testamento, doar o seu coração à cidade. Este encontra-se num mausoléu em pedra, do lado esquerdo da capela-mor. Está mergulhado num líquido que o preserva e num recipiente especial, que é aberto de 4 em 4 anos para verificar o seu estado e substituir o líquido.

Porto folk converted to D. Pedro’s liberal cause and fought bravely along his troops. They never surrendered nor let the city be taken – from that period comes the naming of Porto as “Invincible” and the dragon upon its traditional coat of arms (and not only there…) as a sign of bravery.
As he was leaving Porto to carry on his victorious campaign against the absolutists, D. Pedro proclaimed himself grateful to the city and said: “I must go, but my heart will always be in Porto”.

D. Pedro never forgot this and took it literally, so that in his will he bequeathed his heart to Porto. It stands in a stone mausoleum on the left side of the sanctuary. It’s preserved in a special liquid and recipient, which is only opened every 4 years to check its state and change the liquid.

The cache:
Be very very careful, as the area is always busy with people and muggles are really nosy. Even if it seems there is no living soul around, that may not be the case, and the survival of this cache depends on your caution. Leave the cache in the exact same place and make 100% sure it is not visible from any where!
