O algar do Pico Queimado é uma formação geológica localizada na vertente NW do Pico Queimado e corresponde a uma antiga chaminé vulcânica localizada na freguesia de Santa Bárbara, concelho da Ribeira Grande, nesta Ilha. Esta cavidade apresenta uma geomorfologia de origem vulcânica em forma de algar, dotado de cone vulcânico, com cratera vulcânica localizada em domo traquítico.
The grotto (algar) of Queimado Peak is a geological formation located in the NW part of the Peak and corresponds to an ancient volcanic chimney located in the parish of Santa Bárbara, municipality of Ribeira Grande, in this Island. This cavity has a volcanic geomorphology shaped grotto, endowed with volcanic cone with volcanic crater located over a dome.

O historiador Gaspar Frutuoso, vivo à data deste episódio vulcânico, refere, a propósito deste algar, que dele brotou “...uma ribeira de fogo pela Ribeira Seca abaixo até chegar ao mar, correndo mansamente como metal derretido..." (Gaspar Frutuoso, 1563).
The historian Gaspar Fructuoso, has lived this volcanic episode and wrote about this Algar, “ a river of fire sprouted from it and slowly went downhill , along Ribeira Seca till the sea, running like molten metal ..." (Gaspar Fructuoso , 1563).

Não foi somente a lava emanada da erupção vulcânica através deste algar que contribuiu para a origem do Pico do Sapateiro. Foi antes formado a partir de uma série de vulcões que se verificaram no sul da freguesia da Ribeira Seca, de que restam ainda algumas crateras. Na parte superior deste pico pode assim observar-se quatro pequenas crateras, uma das quais encima este algar, formado durante a erupção vulcânica de 1563.
Not only the lava emanating from the volcanic eruption through this grotto contributed to the origin of Sapateiro Peak. Besides these one, several other small volcanoes that have occurred in the southern parish of Ribeira Seca, contributed as well and some of their craters are still visible. On top of this peak one can therefore see a total of four small craters, being the one on top of this 1563 algar one of them...

Esta lava escaldante, que desceu lentamente as encostas do Pico, procurou naturalmente a depressão de terreno que lhe oferecia o traçado da Ribeira Seca e suas afluentes, e fez o seu caminho até ao mar, semeando fogo e destruição `a sua passagem. Restam ainda hoje alguns vestígios arqueológicos e histórias mais ou menos suportadas pelo fervor religioso da população, e que queremos levar o geocaher a visitar.
This molten lava that slowly descended the Peak slopes, naturally sought land natural depressions that offered it easy route through Ribeira Seca and its affluents, and made its way to the sea, spreading fire and destruction all the way down. There still remains at least one archaeological site and some stories or legends more or less supported by the population´s religious addiction that we want the geocaher to get to know them.

Esta é uma multicache, com três etapas, em que a primeira coincide com o ponto inicial e, tal como a segunda, não contém elementos físicos. A terceira e última etapa, coincide com a cache final, onde é convidado a fazer o seu registo.
This is a three stage multicache . The first one coincides with the multicache starting point and, like the second stage, don´t have physical elements. The third and final stage, coincides with the final cache, where you are invited to log.

Neste ponto Inicial, aproveite para estudar o Pico Queimado e a morfologia do terreno que o separa do mar, tentando vislumbrar a Ribeira Seca e o provável trajeto da escoada da lava. Responda à pergunta:

Starting at this point, take the time to study the Queimado Peak and the terrain morphology from here to the seaside, trying to glimpse the Ribeira Seca and the likely path of the drained lava. Answer the question:
Q:Apart from the crater originated by the 1563 eruption how many more craters (C) are still visible at the top of this peak?
Lembramos que não se torna necessário subir ao Pico para responder… Introduza o valor de C na seguinte equação para obter os minutos das coordenadas decimais da etapa seguinte e prepare-se para medir a distância no terreno, que irá percorrer, pondo o seu conta-quilómetros a zero, ou programando convenientemente o seu GPS para o ajudar nessa medição:
Remember that it is not necessary to climb the Peak to answer ... Enter the C value in the following equation to obtain the minutes of the decimal coordinates of the next stage, and get ready to measure the distance on the ground, in kilometers, resetting your odometer to zero, or conveniently programming your GPS to help you in this measurement:

2ª Etapa/ 2nd Stage :
Como já se terá apercebido, está também no Ponto Inicial do trajecto integrado na segunda etapa da cache e marcado como ´PInicial- Etapa 2´ na foto abaixo.Com o meio de transporte que tiver escolhido, que pode bem ser tão somente as suas pernas, dirija-se para o ponto ´Fim trajeto Etapa 2´, ao longo do caminho marcado a cor azul na foto, que é o trajecto mais próximo possível da direção geral mais provável, seguida pela escoada de lava em 1563 (a vermelho), adequado a qualquer meio de transporte terrestre e rede itinerária atual.
As you already have noticed, you are also at the Starting Point of the journey to the second stage of the cache, marked as 'Stage 2 - Starting point ' in the photo below. Take the transportation mean you´ve been riding , it might just be your legs , and head to the point 'End Stage 2 trip' along the blue path depicted in blue color, which is the closest suitable route to the most likely path of the lava flow in 1563 (marked in red), available for all kinds of ground transportation

Imagine a aflição experimentada pela população no seu caminho… Chegado ao ponto ´Fim trajecto Etapa2´assinalado na foto, que não é o correspondente ao das coordenadas que deve ter obtido para a 2ª etapa, e tome nota da distância efetivamente percorrida. Having you travelling along this blue path, is our intention to make you aware of the dynamics of this virtual river of lava inching hillside and thalweg down below. Imagine the distress experienced by people in the way ... When you reach the point 'End Stage 2 trip' marked in the photo, that doesn’t correspond to the coordinates you should have obtained for the 2nd stage cache, and note the distance actually traveled. Round it to the nearest Kilometer (K).
