Geocache Description:

Grandpa Bailey

Grandpa George Bailey was my mom's dad.  He was born blind in 1895.

Despite being blind, Grandpa Bailey graduated from UW with a degree in Music.  Following his graduation he was hired by the university to play their chimes.  He did that for 32 years until the chimes tower burned down in 1949, and then when the new chimes were installed he played them until his death.  In addition, he was a highly talented musician who played many instruments, and he moved around the city not with a cane, but by whistling... and steering his way by the echo.  :-)

Grandpa Bailey also sold brooms from the Lighthouse of the Blind, door-to-door and on street corners, to help support his family of 3 daughters and 1 son.  We lost Grandpa Bailey in 1960, soon after he learned that his oldest daughter was carrying his first grandbaby.  He never got to meet her... my sister.

There are lots of Interesting stories and books about Grandpa George Bailey on the internet now.
