Num país rodeado pelo mar, e em especial nas ilhas, os faróis são presenças marcantes na paisagem litoral, que nos habituamos a reconhecer e por vezes contemplar. Pontos de referência permanentes para os navegantes a também para quem os vê de terra.
Os faróis informam os navios da localização da terra durante a sua aproximação. Antigamente eram usadas pequenas chamas com um vidro reflectivo tipo luz, mas a maioria mudou para luz eléctrica em cores diferentes. Os faróis utilizam cores diferentes por diversos motivos.
O motivo mais comum para um farol possuir a luz vermelha e branca é se distinguir dos outros faróis. O padrão específico de vermelho e branco, assim como o intervalo com que piscam, é chamado de característica do farol. Em zonas onde existem vários faróis, a característica de cada um informará ao navio a sua localização exacta. Alguns faróis só piscam na cor branca, outros somente na vermelha e outros alternam entre as duas.
Em regiões com baías ou portos estreitos, os faróis utilizam luzes vermelhas e verdes para distinguir o lado de entrada. Na navegação, luzes vermelhas são associadas com o lado do porto, ou lado esquerdo, e verdes são associadas com o lado direito. Ao entrar num porto, o navio observará a luz vermelha à sua esquerda.
