Velas é uma freguesia portuguesa do concelho de Velas, com 15,18 km² de área e 1 985 habitantes (2011). Densidade: 130,8 hab/km². Tem o nome alternativo de São Jorge.
Com base num trabalho ('Ilha de S. Jorge - Descoberta Povoamento Economia - Conferência') do meu Pai (João Gabriel de Ávila), editado pela Câmara Municipal das Velas, em 1994, deixo um pequeno contributo, relativo ao início do povoamento da Ilha de S. Jorge. Para o efeito, apresento o texto relativo ao assunto, inserto na pág. 3, do trabalho supracitado:
''Quando se iniciou o povoamento da Ilha de S. Jorge? É outra incógnita a que os arquivos conhecidos não deram resposta até hoje.
Vamos transcrever a seguinte nota do erudito jorgense que foi o Dr. João Teixeira Soares de Sousa: 'Que Velas foi a primeira Vila da Ilha, povoada primeiro que o Topo. O Topo foi o primeiro lugar onde aportaram os descobridores, o nome o indica. O primeiro lugar povoado, não. Como não foi Guilherme da Silveira (Van der Haagen)o primeiro povoador de S. Jorge. Saindo Silveira do Faial para o Topo, o lugar mais remoto da ilha, havendo nesta parte da Calheta para oeste terrenos tão bons ou melhores do que os do Topo, foi por certo por estes e os do oeste estarem com outros povoadores. O que porém nos tira toda a dúvida de que as Velas foi primeiro povoado do que o Topo, e que não foi Guilherme da Silveira o primeiro povoador da ilha é que, tendo aportado ao Faial vindo da Alemanha(sic)em 1470, é o testamento do Infante D. Henrique, datado de 1460, em que declara ter mandado estabelecer a Igreja de S. Jorge, na lha de S. Jorge. E esta é na Vila das Velas, única que existe e tem existido na Ilha daquela designação'. Based on a work ('Island of St George - Discovery Settlement Economy - Conference') of my Father (John Gabriel de Ávila), published by the City of Sails, in 1994, I leave a small contribution on the early settlement of island S. Jorge. To that end, I present the details of the issue, insert on p. 3, the aforementioned work:
'' When we started the colonization of the island of St. Jorge? It is another unknown to the known files have not responded to date.
Let's transcribe the following note which was Jorgense scholar Dr. João Teixeira Soares de Sousa: 'That was the first candles Village Island, first settled the top.
