Geocache Description:

Epsom Priest Hill Clean up

In collaboration with Surrey Wildlife Trust we will be helping to clean up and create a new nature reserve.

The given co-ordinates (above) are for the entrance to the site where there is ample car parking.

The event will start at 10am and finish at 2pm, but please join us whenever you can.

Equipment will be provided, along with refreshments, but please bring you own lunch.

Bringing children/dogs will be fine but they remain the responsibility of the parents/owners.

06/07/2013 Update

I have just been informed that the entrance road on to site at Priest Hill will be dug up in mid-July so that in can be re-positioned. It is not clear if this will be completed by the 28th. If the on-site parking is available I will make an announcement to let you know. In the meantime I have added two parking waypoints that can be used instead.

Priest Hill

Priest Hill near Epsom is old playing fields that have been abandoned for over 30 years. Derelict structures include demolished houses, pavilions, tennis courts and car parks. Nature has reclaimed the site with areas of rough grassland, wild flowers and scrub that supports a variety of wildlife including a breeding Skylark population. The landowner recently received planning permission for a 4 acre development of 15 houses with the remaining 85 acres being restored to a nature reserve. The development will include a rangers house for an SWT member of staff who will manage the reserve. Work is now under to build the rangers house, remove all derelict structures and fence the site to enable cattle grazing. The day’s task would include clearing litter and rubbish from the site and walking across all proposed grazing areas to ensure no litter is present.

For anyone interested, this site plan shows the boundary of the new nature reserve in red and the bit outlined in blue is where the new houses are going.
