Geocache Description:

This cache was originally placed in 2013 as part of the Washington State Parks Centennial GeoTour - "100 caches in 100 parks to celebrate 100 years" - cosponsored by Washington State Geocaching Association (WSGA).

Curlew Lake State Park is a 123-acre camping park, eight miles from the Stone Rose public fossil dig and the charming gold rush town of Republic. “The Lew” is one of the most relaxing campgrounds in Washington, a great destination for a quiet day trip or overnight adventure. Sitting on the 5.5-mile Curlew Lake, bald eagle, heron and osprey nesting areas are viewable from the park. Water and snow sports are popular activities, as well as natural history and archeological study.

The park is located along the shores of Curlew Lake, a 5.5-mile lake popular for trout, bass and tiger muskie fishing. Curlew Lake has some of the best rainbow trout fishing in the area. Active bald eagle, heron and osprey nesting areas are viewable from the park, making wildlife watching a popular park activity. Known for its exceptionally green lawns, the park offers both tent and RV accommodations. A sea plane dock is located in the south campground.

The park also includes the nearby Ranald MacDonald’s Grave, the smallest interpretive state park in Washington. A 25-mile drive along the Kettle River will take visitors to the park, situated near the Canadian Border.

Park hours:
Summer: 6:30 am to dusk
Winter: Closed November through March

Camping hours:
Check-in: 2:30pm
Check-out: 1pm
Quiet hours: 10pm to 6:30am
During camping season campers may come in after hours, but are asked to be quiet during set up.

Although I have not spent much time at this park, I have spent a lot of time on Curlew Lake, having relatives that have property almost next door to the park.  My brother went to Republic High School his senior year and graduated from there.

Please use stealth when searching for this cache.  While there, take a look at the huge trees that were ripped out of the ground by a violent storm that tore through the area the summer of 2012.  These trees are over 150 years old and were ripped up by their roots like weeds. Also look for the branches that were driven into the ground; the park left them to show people just how damaging the storm was.
