WaStatePks100: Maryhill Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Hippychick1620: As much as I love having a geocache here, it is muggled often, costing me time & gas to travel 200+ miles plus an ammo can each time. At this point I am sadly archiving this, but hope to do a new hide in another area of this beautiful park.

Geocache Description:

This cache was originally placed in 2013 as part of the Washington State Parks Centennial GeoTour - "100 caches in 100 parks to celebrate 100 years" - cosponsored by Washington State Geocaching Association (WSGA).

Maryhill State Park is a 99-acre camping park with 4,700 feet of waterfront on the Columbia River in Klickitat County near Goldendale. The area is significant for its natural beauty, its access to the surrounding natural wonders and its cultural history.

A full-scale partial replica of Stonehenge is located one mile from the park. The Maryhill Museum of Art and the Stonehenge construction are open to the public. The Columbia River offers opportunities for water fun.

Maryhill State Park was acquired by lease from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1972 at no cost. Sam Hill, considered a local eccentric, built a "castle" for his daughter, Mary, on a hill, and named it "Maryhill." He designated the beautiful building, originally designed as a family home, as an art museum before the end of its construction. Mr. Hill built a full-scale, partial replica of England's famous Stonehenge one mile from the state park. He also tried unsuccessfully to establish a Quaker colony in the community in the years preceding World War II.

Park hours:
The park is open year-round for camping and day use.
April-October: 6:30 am to dusk
November-March: 8:00 am to dusk

I grew up coming to this park several times a year. It was a place to swim, fish, have family gatherings, camp, do just about anything! Some of my fondest memories are of playing in the Columbia River at this park. One time we even met Kevin Costner and his family who were camping there!

The cache: It's hidden in a lesser-known area of the park, so much so that I didn't even learn of it until Thanksgiving 2012, when my brother brought me and my kids to this spot to fish. This little pond is stocked with trout during the summer, and is a great spot to get away from the crowd of the park. Although it was winter and we didn't catch anything, we really enjoyed this spot and I wanted to show it off. Please use stealth, as there are some locals that like this spot, and please remember to hide it just as you found it, or better if you can.

I added two parking waypoints. If you can, use the main parking waypoint, you will be able to park and walk a short trail. If the gate is closed you will need to turn around and use the alternate parking coords, located at the entrance to the park. Once you have found the cache I encourage you to drive into the park and see its beauty.
