Stojący przed ratuszem pomnik tego piewcy podhalańskiej ziemi został odsłonięty 8 lipca 1934 roku.
Powstał dzięki uczestnikom XVIII Zjazdu Podhalan i ofiarodawcom ze Związku Podhala z Ameryki Północnej. W uroczystościach brała udział sędziwa matka poety, Katarzyna Smaciarzowa Smreczyńska. Twórcą pomnika był artysta plastyk z Nowego Targu Stanisław Marcinów.
Warto w tym miejscu przybliżyć postać tego wielkiego miłośnika Gorców. Urodził się 27.XI. 1875 roku w Porębie Wielkiej, w biednej, góralskiej rodzinie.Właściwie nazywał się Franciszek Salezy Smaciarz, a w roku 1898 zmienił nazwisko na Smreczyński. Swoje utwory podpisywał natomiast pseudonimem Władysław Orkan. Uczęszczał do szkoły w Porębie, a następnie do szkoły prowadzonej przez cystersów w Szcyrzycu. Po jej ukończeniu naukę kontynuował w gimnazjum św. Jacka w Krakowie. To tutaj po raz pierwszy w roku 1898 wydał swoje "Nowele" i powieść "Nad urwiskiem". W latach 1900-1903 powstały jego największe dzieła, takie jak: "Komornicy", "W roztokach", "Franek Rakoczy" i inne. W utworach tych oddał nie tylko piękno gorczańskiego świata, ale również opisał tutejsze ciężkie i twarde życie. Orkan kochał tą ziemię, służył jej nie tyko piórem. Od 1919 roku został przewodniczącym Związku Podhalan i opracował "Wskazania dla synów Podhala". Włączył się także do starań o odzyskanie dla Polski Spisza i Orawy.
Władysław Orkan zmarł w Krakowie 14.V. 1930 roku a pochowany został na słynnym cmentarzu zasłużonych w Zakopanym, tzw. Pęksowym Brzyzku. Jego imieniem nazwano schronisko na Turbaczu, który tak ukochał.
W dniu 13.11.2012 roku dokonano ponownej “instalacji” pomnika Władysława Orkana na miejskim placu Słowackiego. Pomnik został tu przeniesiony z remontowanej płyty Rynku.
Dla wielu osób wrócił tym samym do domu, bo na placu Słowackiego (nazywanym też Małym Rynkiem) monument został pierwotnie ustawiony jeszcze przed II wojną światową.

Standing in front of the city hall monument to poet of Podhale was unveiled July 8, 1934 year.
It was founded by the participants XVIII Congress of the Highlanders and the donors of the Podhale Association of North America. The ceremony was attended by venerable poet's mother, Catherine Smaciarzowa Smreczyńska. The creator of the monument was a visual artist from Nowy Targ Stanislaw Marcinow.
It is worth to bring the character of this great lover of Gorce. Born 27.XI. 1875 in the Poreba Wielka, in poor, highland family.Realy called Smaciarz Francis de Sales, in 1898 changed his name to Smreczynski. His work was signed by the name of Wladyslaw Orkan. He attended school in Poreba, and then to a school run by the Cistercians in Szcyrzyc. After graduating high school he continued his education at St. Jack in Krakow. Here, for the first time in 1898 published his "Novels" and the novel "Over the cliff." In the years 1900-1903 he created his greatest works, such as "Komornicy", "Na Roztokach", "Frank Rakoczy" and others. In these works he gave not only the beauty of the region Gorce, but also described the local live a hard life. Orkan loved this land, not only served her with pen. From 1919, he was president of the Highlanders and wrote "Recommendations for the sons of Podhale". He turned also to try to regain the back to Poland Spis and Orava.
Władysław Orkan died in Krakow 14.V. 1930 years and was buried in the famous cemetery merit in Zakopane, called. Pęksowy Brzyzek. His name was given shelter to Turbacz hill, which he loved so much.
On 13.11.2012 the city authorities re-"installed" Władysław Orkan monument in the town square of Sowackiego. The monument was moved here from the MainMarket Square and renovated.
For many people it came back home, because the square of the Słowackiego (known as the Small Market Square) monument was originally set before the Second World War.
