Geocache Description:

Second cache in a little series celebrating some of the great trees of the British Isles, great tree with great views over the open countryside. The cache is a small clip lock container with room  for small swaps and small trackables.

Great trees number two - Scots Pine
The latin name for this tree is Pinus sylvestris. Fairly rare to find a Scots pine growing on its own to this size, usually cut down for the timber it produces !
More commonly found in plantations in mountainous country growing for the timber trade, it can also be found within hardwood plantations as a 'nursery' crop in between Oak, Ash and other species. The idea is for the faster growing pines to make the hardwoods grow faster to compete for the light. After between 30 to 50ish years the pines are progressively taken out to allow the hardwoods to mature.
The timber of the Scots Pine is one of the strongest of the softwoods and is widely used for construction, and when treated is used for telegraph poles, pit props and gate posts to name a few uses.
Bruised Pine needles are used for herbal teas and Pine essence is used in the manufacture of bath salts to combat fatigue, sleeplessness, skin irritations and cuts.  Historically in Scandinavia the poor would grind up the inner bark to make bread.
The Scots Pine can grow up to around 36m (120foot) and will live to around 150 years old. Congratulations go to Leonards193 for the First To Find !!!!
