Geocache Description:

Old pilgrimage church of Maria Siebenbrunn.

Right under, or let’s say, by the steep mountains of Karavanke Alps, there is a lonely church Maria Siebenbrunn. Long time ago there was a heavy storm and a landslide buried the church, that’s why the church is half buried.

The church was first mentioned in 14th century, but the building itself dates back to the beginning of 15th century. On the north side of the outer wall, you’ll see a big fresco of Saint Christopher, dating back to 16th century. Some of Gothic style windows still have original painted glass left, but not all of them.

Inside you’ll find few frescos from the late Gothic and Baroque style. The three altars were made by Košir from Ljubno ob Savinji in 1885 and it’s made in New Gothic style. But the altar itself isn’t important since it’s from 19th century. The most valuable in cultural sense are two wood relieves from 15th and 16th century. On the left side there’s depicted death of holly Mary from 16th century. The most important relief is in center of the altar, a statue of sitting Madonna on a throne with baby Jesus.
