Geocache Description:

Vaughan Woods Memorial State Park

River Run Trail and the old hidden lettered Rock.

Before you start the Maine State Parks GeoTour, pick up a Maine State Parks Passport at a Maine State Park or Historic Site - available during the summer season. At each official Maine State Park geocache, stamp your passport with the geocache stamp.

Vaughan Woods State Park was started when the Vaughan family donated 165 acres of land in South Berwick to the State of Maine “to create a forever wild sanctuary for birds and beast” listed as such in their deed. So what makes this special; the White Pines and Eastern Hemlock trees now a second growth forest in southern Maine, these trees tower over the several miles of trails along the Salmon Falls River, over a hundred years in age. In order to feel the history and see the beauty one must visit the river’s edge and view the Hamilton House of 1789 and imagine the early years of colonial ships sailing up and down trading goods from faraway lands. This geocache site is the perfect spot to find both peace and treasure at the park.

The bedrock you will find along this site is 500 million years old, and you will be standing and search on this very location for the geocache, the same location that Native Americans would hunt and fish and hide their own cache of goods. Once the earth cooled and the glaciers advanced carving the surface of the earth and rivers formed and you now can stand at this very location if you find the geocache.
