ExploreWV is back at it, this time to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Wild and Wonderful state of West Virginia! Join us as we celebrate our state’s sesquicentennial by debuting our latest geocaching series, WV Civil War Geo Trail.

Established as a state in 1863, West Virginia is no stranger to the perils and victories of the American Civil War. In fact, West Virginia is the site of the first land battle of the Civil War, which occurred in the small town of Philippi on June 3, 1861. Many battles were fought in what is now West Virginia, often with families fighting against one another. Among these battles were the Battle of Droop Mountain, which led to the collapse of Confederate resistance in the area, and the Battle of Rich Mountain, where a Union victory was instrumental is propelling Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan to command of the Army of the Potomac. Opposing Union and Confederate views ultimately caused the citizens to enlist congressional help to succeed from Virginia and become its own state. Finally, on June 20, 1863, President Lincoln issued the proclamation that made West Virginia the 35th state in America.

The WV Civil War Geo Trail is our way of celebrating that statehood and our significant 150th birthday. “Happy Birthday West Virginia” event will be the official kickoff for the WV Civil War Geo Trail. The trail will consist of 75 geocaches in five (5) regions (called “Zones”) throughout the state, with 15 geocaches in each Zone. Each Zone will also have its own geocoin, which you can receive by finding a minimum of 8 geocaches in that Zone. Bonus? If you complete all five Zones, the geocoins will fit together to form West Virginia!

At the Happy Birthday West Virginia event, you can expect informative classes on a variety of topics related to geocaching, Civil War encampment, delicious Appalachian food vendors, and plenty of activities for families.

If you think you may be interested in attending this event, or if you would like to receive special announcements concerning this event, please mark this event as “will attend” or place it on your watch list.
