Geocache Description:

This cache was originally placed in 2013 as part of the Washington State Parks Centennial GeoTour - "100 caches in 100 parks to celebrate 100 years" - cosponsored by Washington State Geocaching Association (WSGA).

South Whidbey State Park is a 347-acre camping park with 4,500 feet of saltwater shoreline on Admiralty Inlet. Park features include old-growth forest, tidelands for crabbing and clamming, campsites secluded by lush, forest undergrowth and breathtaking views of the Puget Sound and Olympic Mountains. The park offers a unique outdoor experience.

In the summer of 2013 there will be a new kids interpretive trail, on the very trail this cache is on, called the Hobbit Trail, which will have stations designed for kids instruction. It also has a stump named Herb. This trail ends with a view of the waters of the Admiralty inlet of the Puget Sound. Its a nice quick family friendly trail.

There are miles of other trails as well from the Wilbert trail , to the Beach trail to the Discovery trail. Wilbert trail boasts groves of ancient Spruce and Cedar trees over 250 years old including one ancient tree that is 500 years old.

Park Hours
Summer: 8 a.m. to dusk.
Winter: Campground closed Oct. 1, reopens April 30. Day-use area open 8 a.m. to dusk during winter.

On a lighter note, South Whidbey Island State Park offers an actual working phone booth, which is free for all calls to numbers on the island. In addition, this park does have a decent population of nettles so watch your hands accordingly.

Update 2015. The campground has been closed to camping but its still okay to use for day hike purposes.
