Geocache Description:

A simple multi bringing you to St Peter's church in Brown Candover.
The given co-ordinates are for the Lych Gate

St Peter's Church, Brown Candover replaced a mediaeval church which was situated at the western end of the village. This older church was in use up to the 19th Century but fell into disrepair and was pulled down.
The cost of building the new church in Brown Candover was mainly borne by Lord Ashburton whose family seat was the Grange at Northington and who owned much of the land in the neighbourhood.

The church, designed by Thomas Henry Wyatt, was built in 1844 using knapped flints in a regular pattern and freestone for the window tracery and other ornamental details. In 1979 major repair to the flint and stone work was required and restoration was undertaken over the next few years. During this restoration the nave was reordered which included the removal of the choir stalls, raising the floor and laying carpet. This enabled concerts, school nativity plays and other activities to take place.

Although the south aspect of the church is memorable in relation to the village cricket ground and the landscape, it is the interior which is most memorable. It is indeed large and open, and an unsympathetic visitor might find it bare and empty. But if the visitor looks up he will see a magnificent roof structure – which is one of the great glories of the building and if he looks further he will find that all the furnishings, save the Communion rails, are of the same date as the church which makes this church a significant monument in church building of the first half of the 19th Century. The bells were restored in 2000 with a donation from the Lottery Millennium fund.
