Location: Low Park Wood sits between the River Kent and the busy A591. There are two suggested starting places with parking, either at the end of the minor road near this cache, room for 4 cars, or at Sizergh Farm Shop, which has a good car park. Being circular, either start point is good, but we've described the route starting here. See the route map.
Alternative starts are at Sizergh Castle itself, walk down the drive and take great care crossing the very busy dual carriageway to the Farm Shop. Or park at the Stirckland Arms pub on Nanny Pipe Lane near the entrance to the Castle and the back lane to the Farm Shop. Note: The Castle and pub are accessed from the A590, Barrow road, not the A591 to Windermere.
The route generally follows the Sizergh Barn Farm Trail, with a slight extension up the river and back around the Caravan site. A mixture of terrain with plenty of things to see along the way. A free Farm Trail leaflet is available from a dispenser in the car park or in the Farm Shop, which will tell you more about the sites along the way. The lower part of the wood is the site of an old extensive gunpowder works, utilising the water power via a network of leats and channels. More info here: Gunpowder! It is now a seasonal caravan site, and please keep to the edge of the site.
Onward! The next cache is LPW 1a Boom Boom Again. Follow the caravan site road by the river, then continue on the path between the leat and river. Return on the west side of the leat for LPW 2.
(The Safie Series goes up the East bank of the river towards Kendal)
