Geocache Description:

The Church of Saint Peter Monks Horton

This is a small piece of rural Kent that seems to be untouched by the ravages of modern society.

A church stood on this site at the time of the Domesday survey. What can be seen today dates from circa 1400.

Built of flint and stone it is a real gem; one not to be missed. It is a simple two cell Norman church, grade 11 listed. Its wooden tower was removed during restoration in 1847. The interior of the church is lovely, the roof timbers in particular. It is another church that feels special the moment you see it by the roadside. The gnarled yew tree in the churchyard is thought to be between 1,000 and 1,400 years old. It did suffer some damage in the winter of 1962/3. Yew was traditionally used to make longbows and spears and has been used since Pagan times. It is poisonous and never found near areas grazed by livestock. Backing onto farmland, it is situated off the B2068 ‘Stone Street’ between Hythe and Canterbury, Junction 11 off the M20. The lanes are very narrow and at the time of placing the cache, quite pot holed.

This church is well worth the drive to discover it. Details on obtaining the key to the church are on the notice board. Access is only a quick phone call away.

You can park in the lane directly outside the church. There is room for several vehicles.

The cache is a 35mm film pot in a camouflage bag, hidden outside the churchyard at the above co-ordinates. It contains a log book only and a badge for FTF. Please do not go into the fields or disturb the gates on either side of the churchyard, the cache container can be reached by passing your hand through from the roadside and having a ‘feel’ about. Please ensure it is returned safely to the place where you found it, well hidden from muggles. Please close the lid on the pot and the velcro top to the bag to keep the contents dry. Thank you.

Please remember to bring your own pen.

**CONGRATULATIONS!**
