Geocache Description:

A cache in the über suburbs that grew in this area during the 1930's. Unlike the centuries-old village churches that the CM series celebrates, this cache marks one of the more modern churches that were established to serve the theological needs of the growing suburban population.

In 1930 after many meetings and money raising events, a sum of £2,000 had been raised. A dual purpose Mission Hall was built and dedicated to God's service on Wednesday 24 September 1930. Further money raising activities were undertaken and in 1936 a new Hall was dedicated by the Bishop. Eventually, plans were submitted for the erection of consecrated church to replace the mission. In 1955 the foundation stone for the new church building was laid and construction works took about one year. During this time notable murals were painted by the Artist Hans Feibusch who has also worked on a number of other Church buildings. These murals appear on the wall behind the Communion Table and within the dome of the roof. The Church was consecrated by the Bishop of Rochester, Dr Chavasse on 11 December 1957.

St Peter’s is an unusual octagonal shape. I have tried to find out about the significance of the design, but failed to turn anything up apart from the original architect’s plans which were submitted.

At the given coordinates, you will see a foundation stone set into the wall of the church (you will probably have to enter the church grounds via the side gate on Bristow Road to read it). Look at the number of letters in:
