Geocache Description:

Small cache located near Knack Mine Ford, which is a useful crossing place of the River Taw on the way to Steeperton Tor.

Knack Mine Ford is named after the nearby mine which is now disused, and was one part of the mining activity in this part of the moor.

The ford is easy to cross with flat stones on the shallow stream bed usually leading to dry feet on the other side. There is believed to have been a clapper bridge here in the past, and presumably the rough military track which crosses here on the way to Hangingstone Hill from the miltary "Ring Road" may have used existing tracks from the mine when it was built.

The cache is a small container with a 35mm film canister containing the log.

Please Note: This is a Military Training Area on which live firing and other pyrotechnics may be used. The area is generally open public access. One of the safety rules for public access is:- Do not, (and ensure that children do not) approach, touch or pick up any metal objects lying on the ground. Please obey all byelaws and locally posted information concerning times when the area may be closed. These may be physical barriers, flags or lights.

This cache complies with the DNPA agreement for geocaching - http://www.dartmoor-npa.gov.uk/visiting/vi-enjoyingdartmoor/geocaching
