AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT........ Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

thehoomer: I think its time to say goodbye to the quarry and maze now. Thank you all once again for attending, working so hard and for your great logs and pictures.

Just a little plug for something else which is a bit different.....

I'm pleased to announce that there will be another opportunity to enter and explore the fantastic restored bunker (GCYW28) at our 'Cold War In Oxfordshire' cache on Sunday 16th June between 12:00hrs - 16:00hrs.
Terry and his team will be on hand to answer any questions you have on the restoration or indeed, the bunker's history.
Parking at the site is very limited and I'm guessing that only 2 people will be permitted in the bunker at any one time. In view of this, please could you post any expressions of interest on the cache page in order for us to create a timetable if necessary.

Have a fantastic summer everyone.
Becks & Dave[:D].

Geocache Description:

Bored with camping or a chat in a pub? Want to be more 'hands on' and take part in history? This one's for you then.....An Event cache in a disused quarry. There are steps down to the quarry floor or a steep, rough ramp. A rare opportunity to grab several different cache types in one place.

This is an Event Cache with a difference. .

For several years now, Thehoomer have been visiting Kirtlington Quarry with our dog Charlie. It is a great area for exercising dogs and a wonderful open space for children to run around and play. Kirtlington Quarry has been designated a SSSI due to the discovery of Jurassic fossils including those of dinosaurs and rare mammals. Over time, many of the exposures in the quarry had become overgrown but when it was leased to Cherwell District Council, clearing, on-site interpretation, improved access and observation platforms were put in place .

Over 20 years ago, a fascinating 50’ stone maze was created on the quarry floor. Despite our best efforts over the years that we have been visiting, this maze has become faded and less prominent. With the kind permission of Natural England and Cherwell District Council, we have pleasure in inviting you to take part in history and help restore the maze to its former glory. Please feel free to bring any aids for stone collection (i.e. wheelbarrows, gloves, personal shopping trolleys, buckets). A full briefing will be given but it goes without saying that only loose stones on the quarry floor are to be used in the restoration project. No excavations of the rock face will be permitted - no matter how small, so please leave your Geological hammers and related equipment at home! We will also be equipped with bin bags to take away any litter that you find.

There are 2 pubs in the village and a small shop. There is also a quaint and unusual canal-side tea garden a few minutes walk from the parking. Ample parking is available at the top of the quarry. The event will commence at 12:00hrs on 18th May 2013 and will finish at approximately 15:00hrs. Bring your children, dogs and a picnic. ALL are welcome, including those of you on holiday in the area. We look forward to seeing you all.
