A ilha da Madeira possui uma orografia bastante acidentada, sendo os pontos mais altos o Pico Ruivo (1.862 m) e o Pico do Areeiro (1.818 m). O relevo, bem como a exposição aos ventos predominantes, fazem com que na ilha existam diversos micro-climas o que, aliado ao exotismo da vegetação, constitui um importante factor de atracção para o turismo, principal actividade da região. Não existem grandes variações térmicas durante todo o ano mantendo-se o clima ameno com temperaturas médias a rondar os 22ºC (máxima) e os 16ºC (mínima). A temperatura da água do mar, devido à influência da corrente quente do Golfo, mantém-se nos 22ºC no Verão, arrefecendo gradualmente até atingir os 17ºC no fim do Inverno.
