Vesuvius - Valley of Hell and Valley of the Giant
The State Forestry Corps controls the reserve; access is free, but you need to send a mail to utb.caserta@corpoforestale.it to inform about your visit one or two weeks in advance.
The mail shall include the following information: what is the day of your visit, the path, the number of persons and the leader.
This short visit to the The Valley of Hell will take 20 minutes to arrive to the cache, 10 minutes to find it, and 25 minutes to come back to the parking.

The Valley of Hell is one of the most scenic walks in the Somma-Vesuvius volcanic complex because it is not much frequented by people, and because you live the grandeur looking from the bottom of the volcano Mount Vesuvius and Somma.
The Valley is partially invaded by the tongue of lava last eruption in 1944, colonized by lichen Stereocaulon Vesuvianum.
The Valley of Hell is also the eastern part of the wider Valley of the Giant.
When you are at the center of the valley, near the cache, you have the feeling of being on Mars!
The cache can be reached from the path n.1 of the National Park of Vesuvius, La Valle dell’Inferno, and you can start either from Ottaviano or from the road leading up to Mount Vesuvius from Ercolano-Torre del Greco: the reference coordinates lead you to the access gate to start from that road.

In order to find abcde and fghij, you need to retrieve the altitude of Mt.Vesuvius, Punta Nasone (Mt.Somma) and Cognoli di Ottaviano from an official map of the Vesuvius National park, also available on the web.
