Geocache Description:

St Nicholas, Hockerton

ST NICHOLAS, HOCKERTON

St Nicholas is a Grade II* listed building, achieving the status on 11 August 1961.

The church was largely constructed during C12th, C13th and C14th. A restoration in 1876 was carried out by Hodgson Fowler.

The building was severely damaged during the English Civil War between King Charles I and Parliament in the C17th. The roof was badly in need of repair and oak from Sherwood Forest was used in the subsequent work.

Inside the church there are the remains of a carved C14th Easter Sepulchre. There is also a restored C16th Alms Box.

Some bench ends date from C16th with the remaining bench ends, pews and font all dating to the C19th restoration.

There are wall mounted plaques inside to John Augustine Finch, 1780 and John Whetham, 1781.

AS OF MARCH 2016 ST NICHOLAS WAS DECONSECRATED AND IS NO LONGER OPEN FOR WORSHIP
