If this neo-gothic monument reminds you of Paris' Eiffel Tower, you're not just seeing things. It was built by a disciple of Gustave Eiffel in 1902 (just a few years after the Eiffel Tower), with the purpose of taking people between downtown and the Bairro Alto and Chiado districts. It is 45 meters high (147ft), and has a spiral staircase leading to a terrace and café offering 360-degree bird's-eye views of the city. Today it's mostly used by tourists, a ride that only lasts a few seconds but that's a fascinating journey back to the early 20th century.
The belvedere “Elevador de Santa Justa” is one highest points of any holidays visit to Lisbon. Not only for it’s architecture but because it offers a all in one experience and a great final with one of the best high ground views over Lisbon down-town and panoramic view over the Tagus river.
Elevador Santa Justa offers one of the best panoramic views over Lisbon Built in the XIX century by Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard a Gustave Eiffel – the Architect of the Eiffel Tower – apprentice, this Neo-Gothic marvel was a Landmark in that time, either for it’s 30 meters hight, design or by being one of the first elevators being moved by electricity, though first moved by steam engines. The interiors are in great condition showing the a beautiful wooden decorations. The trip takes about 20 seconds giving you to photograph the interiors and inner structure of the elevator, every detail will deserves it. Elevador Santa Justa, once on top it offers a view of the Carmo’s Convent Ruins Once in the top you have a privilege view over Lisbon down-town, Lisbon hills (including the Castelo de São Jorge), the Tagus River and a view of what was left of the Carmo’s Convent after the massive Lisbon 1755 earthquake and subsequent fire.
Há uma razão porque este monumento neo-gótico lembra a tanta gente da Torre Eiffel. É porque foi desenhado por um dos discípulos de Gustave Eiffel em 1902 (pouco depois da Torre Eiffel), com a intenção de ligar a Baixa ao Chiado e Bairro Alto. Os seus passageiros sobem e descem os seus 45 metros, tendo no topo uma vista de 360 graus sobre a cidade. Hoje é sobretudo usado por turistas, numa fascinante viagem que só dura uns segundos mas que transporta até ao princípio do século XX.
