Geocache Description:

A JOURNEY IN THE DARK THROUGH WHITMORE BOG.

This cache can only be found IN THE DARK OF NIGHT - the darker the better!

Whitmore Bog covers approx 100 acres and consists of a mixture of managed & wild woodland, part of which is extremely wet all year round. The area is fairly well known locally, & is lightly used by dog walkers during the day on the footpaths that run throughtout the site. In December the area also attracts Tourists to a seasonal destination. The trail has been re-routed & you do not need to enter the paid for attraction to complete it. It may make a more interesting finish to your day, however. If your kids have dragged you off to see Santa, why not return the compliment by dragging them off to meet the Bog Monster!

Overall a walk of approx 3km. Terrain can get VERY BOGGY - unsurprising given the name of the location!  Wellies / Boots essential. I would advise caution about attempting this cache with small children. If you want them to experience a Night Cache; try "Ellie's Englemere Insomnia (AJNC #1)" first.  A much shorter / easier Night Cache.

If you are new to Night Caches; here are some tips for you;
1. Try "Ellie's Englemere Insomnia (AJNC #1)" first. Start point is approx 50m from this one. It is MUCH easier, & will give you a better introduction into the Firetacks you will be following.
2. The brighter the torch, the easier your task.
3. For best results, hold your torch at eye level.
4. Record the GPS location of the start point. You may need this to find your way back!
5. This area can get VERY BOGGY. I've gone half way up to my knees in water setting it up & testing it; & I knew where I was going!
6. It has been completed in the dark with its 9-year old namesake, but I would advise caution & definately old clothes.

The trail begins from the new Waypoint added in Dec 2013, in the SE corner of the site, close to the Lapland UK car park. Follow the path into the wood, turn on your torches & scan the trees for your first Firetack.  Some are silver, some are orange and some are "Diamond bright" - the best Firetacks on the market according to the US supplier.  These are very good!  You will know when you reach GZ - the traditional Night Cache GZ sign is watching you!  Small tupperware box with log & pen.

If you are here in daylight, this area & the nearby Englemere Pond are a great place for a walk.  There are plenty of daytime caches nearby to try.
