"You don't go to Bolus unless on business" is a local saying that I came across shortly after moving here 20 years ago. It refers to the townland of Bolus near Ballinskelligs and the remote and desolate nature of this area and that there is no reason to go Bolus unless for unavoidable "business". Well, that business has finally arrived! Our cache together with the recently established loop walk should put Bolus firmly on the map. We will approach it from "The Glen" side and not from Ballinskelligs.
The Glen or St Finan's Bay is a part of the South-West Kerry coastline with spectacular views over the Skellig Islands. It also has a nice little beach that is popular with surfers.
The cache is hidden along the Bolus Head Looped Walk. This offers magnificent views over St. Finan's Bay, the broad Atlantic and on a clear day, more than 12 islands. In a clockwise direction they are: Deenish, Scarrif, Dursey Island, the group of The Bull, The Cow and The Calf, Great Skellig, Little Skellig, Lemon Rock, Puffin Island, Blasket Islands and Valentia Island.
The walk itself is 9km long and took us 2½ hours including a break to hide the cache midway. Walking boots are recommended. Details of the walk can be found here.
This cache can be easily combined with our other cache in the area, The Glen as the parking spot and trailhead is the same as the fist stage of The Glen.
