AFTERNOON DELIGHT
This is probably not the same thing that Dolly Parton had in
mind when she made this hit way back in the eightys but you are
going to love this little hike. The Cache is located on a little
known and seldom used piece of wooded land that lies very quietly
between a Charlotte Cemetery and a Public School.
For the last five or six years, Birdwatchers have come here in
the early mornings with their binoculars, cameras and tape
recorders to capture on film and on tape the actions and sounds of
such birds as: the robin, english sparrow, turkey vulture,
Cardinal, mourning dove, bobwhite, kestrel, redtailed hawk, flicker
and on occasion the Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker but no one has ever
seen a Kirtland’s warbler. Perhaps you will break the spell.
Recently, “the powers that be” thought about bulldozing the
trees and clearing the land for soccer fields and softball fields
that they said were needed on the East side. There was an outcry
from the citizens in the area and it was decided to leave the area
unimproved until such time that monies could be raised, found or
appropriated for improvements to the area that would include paved
paths and green areas.
It is a nice easy walk that curves between wooded areas and
emerges onto broad open areas for short distances only to disappear
again into the deciduous and evergreen woods. Some wild and
ferocious animals that you might encounter are: playful gray
squirrels, raccoons, moles, and a slow and ugly “possum”. Many
years ago there was a goat who lived and roamed this area at will
but he is “long gone” now. He even had articles in the newspaper
written about him.
