Geocache Description:

St Michael, Averham

ST MICHAEL, AVERHAM

St Michael is a Grade I listed building, achieving the status on 11 August 1961. The lych gate is also Grade II listed, achieving the status on 19 September 1985.

The church is situated at the end of Church Lane, on a bluff overlooking the River Trent. There was certainly a wooden church here in Saxon times, and it is thought that the first stone building and foundations of the present day church were laid in the late Saxon period. However, the main body of the building that can be seen today was begun during the Norman period and altered and extended during the 14th and 15th centuries.

The chancel was restored in 1857 by C. Bailey and further restorations took place in 1858 and 1907. The whole building was re-roofed in 1865.

Some of the oak bench pews date from C14th. The east window has re-used stained glass dating from C15th originally from Kelham Hall. Most of the glass is from C19th and was designed and made by Heaton, Butler and Bayne.

There are two war memorials inside the church. A timbered memorial commemorates WWI and a wooden tablet commemorates WWII.
