The church in Hólmavík stands on a hill called Brennuhóll which bares it names from the festival fire the locals in Hólmavík used to lid there every New Years Eve. There is a nice view from the church over the village.
The construction of the church in Hólmavík started in 1957 and it was consecrated on Ascension Day in 1968. It was designed by the architect Gunnar Olafsson, who died during the construction period. Sveinn Kjarval took over and designed the interior and equipment systems except for the altar and pulpit, which are made of pine like the whole interior.
The church is built of concrete and it seats about 150 people. Two windows in the choir are stained. A crucifix decorates the wall above the altar. The baptismal is made of Icelandic dolerite and pine and a replica of the statue of John the Apostle from the cathedral in Nidaros in Norway. The church bells were made in Capanni in Italy.
