Geocache Description:

This is part of the Church Micro series administered by Sadexploration, please bring your own pen/cil to sign the log.

Please note that there is parking opposite the cache.

The church Micro series is intended to bring Geocachers to various churches all over the UK (and beyond).

Some of these churches provide the backdrop of our communities history. Please take some time to either read the cache page or visit the church.

Due to the nature of these locations you may encounter some local activity, and I have either tried to ensure that there is safe parking or that the cache is placed out of view wherever possible, so please don't expect a clear run at busy times.

ST SWITHUN'S PARISH CHURCH, LONG BENNINGTON

A Church was recorded in the Domesday Book, so we know a building existed before 1086. As with most medieval churches, many structural changes have taken place since inception to the present day. The only Norman features remaining are polygonal shafts with scalloped capitals in the south doorway.

The Nave Arcade certainly has a Romanesque feel to it, but here the building period lies between the architectural styles of Norman and Early English.

The current church dates from about 1175; the chancel of which is thought to have been used by the Cistercian Priory, whose existence is recorded in 1150.

The building has been added to and refurbished over the years. In 1999 the tower area was converted to form an upper room for meetings and a kitchen and toilet on the ground floor.

There is permanent seating for about 180 people, with folding chairs for any overflow. Some pews were removed in recent years to make more versatile space.

Long Bennington churchyard merits special attention because of its status as one of the leading conservation areas, belonging to a church, in the UK.

The cache is situated on the Viking Way, a few feet from the church car parking area. This church can be seen across the fields from the higher situated Foston Church Micro.

If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication
