Geocaching 101 Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

GameForTravel: Looks like all attendees have logged their adventure, so I will be archiving this event. By the way, there were twelve attendees, most from the North Alabama / Northern Tennessee (NA/STy) cachers and other groups on meetup.com.

Thanks to all!

How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

Seen suspicious behavior by strangers out in the woods, in local parks, or parking lots, wandering around aimlessly looking at a device in their hand? Listened to endless stories from friends obsessed with geocaching? Heard the term and have no idea what it involves? Found a strange item in a strange place and found a note inside about this hi-tech game/ sport/ hobby/ pasttime and want to learn more? Here's your chance!

The presentation will start at 10:00 AM in the Meeting Room to the left after going in the front door at the
Eleanor E. Murphy Branch Library
7910 Charlotte Drive
Huntsville, AL 35802

The class will last about an hour and be followed by a practice cache run to find some "real" caches posted on geocaching.com; one is very close to that branch of the library (Please wear proper footwear). A list of more caches nearby will also be provided.

The major topics to be covered include:

• History of Global Positioning System
• Description of Geocaching
• How to hide a cache
• How to find a cache
• Online research
• What to take with you
• Using a GPS to find a cache
• Logging your adventures

With so many brands and models of GPS units on the market, there is insufficient class time to teach you how to use your own GPS. You are encouraged to bring one (or a smart phone with the geocaching app installed - it's only $10). Perhaps another attendee will be able to help you use it during the practice period. More experienced cachers are invited to tell stories of caching adventure, share skills and techiques, and to help less experienced cachers.
This event is also posted for the North Alabama / Southern Tennessee (NA/STy) Geocachers group on meetup.com... and a couple of other local groups on meetup.com; attendance will likely be higher than indicated by responses here.
