The Huntsville-Madison County Public Library is sponsoring a variety of hi-tech programs during the summer of 2013. This event is part of that program and they're calling it.... How to Do Things: Geocaching.
The presentation will start at 6:30 PM in the Events Room on the second floor of the Main Branch downtown,
915 Monroe Street, Huntsville AL 35801
(256) 532-5940.
The class will last about an hour and be followed by a practice cache run to find some "real" caches posted on geocaching.com and a couple of "practice" caches on the Library property (outside, of course. Please bring proper clothing, footwear, and a flashlight).
The major topics to be covered include:
• Brief history of he Global Positioning System
• Description of Geocaching
• How to hide a cache
• How to find a cache
• What to take with you
• Using a GPS to find a cache
• Logging your adventures
With so many brands and models of GPS units on the market, there is insufficient class time to teach you how to use your own GPS. You are encouraged to bring one (or a smart phone with the geocaching app installed - it's only $10). Perhaps another attendee will be able to help you use it during the practice period. More experienced cachers are invited to tell stories of caching adventure, share skills and techiques, and to help less experienced cachers.
