Geocache Description:

It is the 2012 award season for the movies, music, television – and NoVAGO Geocachers! The nomination window for a baker’s dozen of categories is opening. Nominate by e-mail or join your fellow NoVAGO cachers at this event to talk about the caches and cachers and lobby for some of your 2012 favorites.

When: 6:00-9:00pm
Where: California Tortilla, 2930 Chain Bridge Rd. #102, Oakton, VA

After the nominations are closed and the finalists are selected, NoVAGO cachers will be able to vote and the winners will be announced at the 2013 Spring Event on April 20th.

During 2012, you had 556 FTF chances in the NoVAGO region. That many caches were placed during the year – and were still there on February 1st of 2013. More than 80 percent of those (448) were traditional caches and another 15% were unknown types (81). To add to the variety, there are 16 new multi-caches, 9 letterbox hybrids, and 2 Earthcaches. Although not included in this count, there were a stunning number of events in the area during the year.

Led by 156 new placements in Fairfax County, the NoVAGO region included caches from these 18 areas for this award year: Alexandria City, Arlington, Clarke, Fairfax, Fairfax City, Falls Church City, Fauquier, Frederick, Fredericksburg City, Loudoun, Manassas City, Manassas Park City, Prince William, Rappahannock, Shenandoah, Stafford, Warren, and Winchester City.

From a difficulty and terrain (D/T) perspective, there were 16 new 1/1 caches and 2 new 5/5 caches (one a challenge and the other a bonus). Most popular were 1.5/1.5 caches, with 139 new caches in that combination. In addition to the 5/5 caches, there were five new 5-star difficulty and four new 5-star terrain caches. Those folks trying to complete their D/T grid would have filled in 58 of the 81 blocks with the 2012 caches.

If you are more of a calendar person, then perhaps you would be interested to know that the most popular month for new caches was February, when 64 were placed (including 12 on February 29th). Perhaps surprisingly, the summer months were the least popular placement months.

Sticking with the calendar theme, you could have completed 240 days of your “caches hidden” days by finding all of the 2012 caches.  You would have missed only six days in May and November. February 29th (with 12 hides) and April 29th (with 11 hides) provided the most options for any given days.

Regardless of how you look at them, there are many opportunities to honor caches and cachers. Go to the NoVAGO forums to learn more about the award categories and how to submit nominations via e-mail and then how to vote.
