Torquay railway station is on the Riviera Line and serves the seaside resort of Torquay in Devon. The station is operated by First Great Western and is just a few yards from the sea at Abbey Sands. The current stone built building was opened along with two signal boxes in 1878; at the same time the line through was doubled by GWR and in 1892 the track was changed to the now familiar standard gauge from Brunels’ Broad Gauge. This is a good station to visit with excellent architecture and bridges, not to mention the signal box at the southern end of the platform. The arched retaining wall at the bottom of the station forecourt is worth a look too.
