Geocache Description:

This cache was originally placed in 2013 as part of the Washington State Parks Centennial GeoTour - "100 caches in 100 parks to celebrate 100 years" - cosponsored by Washington State Geocaching Association (WSGA).

Moran State Park opened in 1921 when Robert Moran, shipbuilder and former mayor of Seattle, donated more than 2,700 acres to the state for a park. Most of the trails, roads, bridges, and buildings in the park were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) during the 1930s. The builders used native materials on site to construct the many stone and wooden shelters and buildings.

The park is known for the stone observation tower atop of Mount Constitution that was built by the CCC in 1938. It was built as a fire lookout and a view site.

Little Summit had a lookout tower also. The lookout was a 50' wooden tower built in 1966 by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). It was built so tourist would not interfere with the fire watchers duties up at the top of Mt. Constitution. It was used very little for fire watching. The tower was removed in 1988 by a private party. All that remains today is the stone/concrete bases of the stairs, footings of the tower and the compass rose. There are a few picnic tables so you can have lunch and enjoy the view!

This area is often missed by visitors.

There are two wonderful viewpoints!

Park hours:
The park is open year round for camping and day use.
Summer: 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Winter: 8 a.m. to dusk. Some campsites are closed in winter.

Orcas Island can be reached by Washington State Ferries, private boat or by plane.
