Back in 1988 a tradition was created for geeks to celebrate the number Pi (3.14) on March 14 (3/14).
It is logical to have the gathering start at 3:14, but 6:30 PM is more customary for cachers. (Not everything that cachers do is "logical").
ADDED 03/10 upon the suggestion of Gray Bat: official start time changed to 6:28 PM (2*Pi = 2 * 3.14 = 6.28) How cool is that?
One way to celebrate Pi Day is to eat pie. Instead of the sweet kind, we'll gather to eat pizza pie. The restaurant is famous for its great tasting food! The last time geocachers had an event here (10/10/10), it was located next to Shoney's. That restaurant has closed and razed and replaced with a Mapco Mart. But all of that is irrelevant since Big Ed Pizza is the same as it has always been: good food and good service.
Speaking of which, their good pizzas are not fast food. It is highly recommended to call ahead to place your order: 256-489-3374.
Let the old song says, "It's my Pi Day and I'll cache if I want to."
