THE PLACE

(For description in English look below)

Not many Muscovites know about this memorial. (I'd say, not many people in Russia know Whitman's poetry). So, when the monument was erected at the territory of the Moscow State University, first without any table on its pedestal, there appeared rumours about who could it be.

It was in 2009 when the memorial was opened officially by Mrs Hillary Clinton, at that time the Secretary of State, Mr Lavrov (Russian minister of foreign affairs) and Mr Luzhkov (Moscow major).

In fact, the monument was a gift to the Russian capital from the City Hall of Washington after the US capital got similar present from Russians — a monument to famous Russian poet Alexander Pushkin. This monument was placed at the territory of the Washington University. When it came to make a responding gift there were different «candidates» including Mark Twain and Edgar Allan Poe; finally they chose Walt Whitman. The monuments to both poets were created by Russian sculptor Alexander Burganov.

To hunt for the cache you need to enter the territory of the Moscow State University which is not restricted in any way. You don't need to enter any premises.

Легенда / the walkthrough:

Slowly walk to the ..., watch high for the ..., ... the ..., ... on your ..., ... on your ..., towards the ... ..., look for the ...

Ключ / the key:

  • Here may he hardy, sweet, gigantic grow, here raise proportionate to Nature
  • Voracious, mad for the bait, near the surface, they seem to fill the water for mile
  • I see the crusaders marching bearing the banner on high, to the martial clang of cymbals
  • How straight and strong they stand on their legs — what fine sagacious eyes!
  • Possess'd by some strange spirit of wind, quench'd by an early death
  • The cities I loved so well I abandon'd and forgot, I sped to the certainties suitable to me
  • He drank whiskey only, the blood show'd like scarlet through the clear-brown skin of his face
  • Surely whoever speaks to me in the kind voice, him or her I shall follow
  • Wooded flesh and ivory bone, limb only one and lip only one
  • I see mechanics working, I see pyramids everywhere founded, going up, or finish'd
  • I have witness'd the true magic, I have witness'd my cities electric
