A cache near Venerato.
The monastery of Palianis is actually a nunnery. It is locate near the village of Venerato 20 km north of Heraklion. It is considered one of the oldest and richest monasteries in Crete. It is founded around 500 and in the church of Saint John in the monastery there are frescoes of 14 century. The name Paliani is coming either from the Greek word palia moni which means old monastery or from the ancient town of Apolonia which was located nearby. The monastery is open from sunrise till sunset every day.
The trademark of the monastery is an old Myrtle, the Holy Myrtle. People believe it is healing deceases. They also say that there is a painting of Virgin Mary in the tree which only the children may see it.
The cache is a film canister placed just before the parking place. Please be aware of muggles, in summer it is a very busy place.
